Everyone goes on Netflix binges, right?
Lately, mine has been on “New Girl”, the chronicling of an off-beat group of tight-knit twenty-/thirty-something roommates. Former 30 Rock scribe Kay Cannon is one of the show’s writers and I see Zooey Dechanel’s character Jess as a younger, sweeter version of Liz Lemon. But, I have to admit, Liz is much funnier, and 30 Rock’s supporting cast, much, much zanier (I love you, Jane Krakowski, Alec Baldwin, Maulik Pancholy!). And the writing of 30 Rock? Mucho mas “tight”.
The only supporting cast member that comes close to the quality of that insane intensity is Max Greenfield (“Control”). And the guest star who surprised me in “New Girl”? Justin Long, who sharply resembles his older brother Damien, who used to appear in all of the Princeton theater gigs. Who knew that he voiced Alvin in all of the Chipmunk movies? Who knew that he had dated Drew Barrymore? Who knew that his younger brother Christian looks just like him? My God, do those good-looking actor genes carry into all filial lines (Baldwin, Fiennes, Wilson, Long)?
