ABC Foodie Eats: Penang Char Kway Teow
You know my parents studied in Penang, yes?
Clustered together under makeshift awnings next to the roads are hawker stalls selling freshly stir-fried char kway teow – flat rice noodles mixed with chives, light and dark soy sauce, chili, belachan (shrimp paste), shrimp, bean sprouts, and egg.
When we visited Penang as children, Mom would make a beeline for the char kway teow stall; damn it, we were gonna get some of these noodles! This is most likely our mother’s favorite Malaysian snack, if fu jian xia mian is our father’s craving in Phuket.
